Road to Artist Point at Mount Baker to reopen on June 27

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will reopen the final 2. 7-mile stretch of the Mount Baker Highway, known as the Road to Artist Point, on June 27 at 8 a. m. Crews have successfully removed up to 20 feet of snow from the roadway and the Artist Point parking lot. However, trails accessible from Artist Point remain buried under deep snow, with most signage obscured, leading to recommendations for visitors to plan ahead due to limited cell service.

WSDOT estimates that more than 650 vehicles visit Artist Point each day during the summer season. The Heather Meadows Visitor Center will also reopen on June 27, offering daily hours from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m.

This reopening follows the annual snow removal efforts that ensure access to popular recreational areas in the Mount Baker region. Travelers can expect to see ongoing maintenance efforts from both WSDOT and the U. S. Forest Service throughout the summer months. This accessibility is crucial for local tourism, highlighting the area's natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
