Uber driver accused in Bellevue, WA sexual assault case pleads not guilty

Martin Njoki, a 43-year-old rideshare driver from King County, pleaded not guilty to charges including indecent liberties and unlawful imprisonment with sexual motivation. Prosecutors allege he assaulted a 16-year-old passenger during a February Uber ride in Bellevue. His attorney emphasized that Njoki has no prior criminal history and is the primary caregiver for his mother and five children. Despite the defense's request for a lower bail, the prosecution sought $150,000, highlighting the gravity of the allegations. Judge Averil Rothrock ultimately reduced bail to $30,000, imposing home detention upon release.

A sexual assault protection order was also issued in connection with the case. Njoki's supporters filled the courtroom during his hearing, reflecting community backing. As of Thursday, he remains in custody at King County Jail.
