Opening Soon Downtown Demonstration Bikeway

Bellevue, WALocal News

Bellevue's new Demonstration Bikeway project is a significant step towards enhancing bicycle safety and mobility in the downtown region. Starting June 10, construction is underway to establish a protected bike lane along 108th Avenue NE, with completion expected by July. The bikeway aims to create a safer north-south route for cyclists, contributing to the city council's vision of a connected bicycle network that enhances livability and local economic vitality. Key design features will include curb and post dividers, green pavement markings, and shared lane markings, modeled after successful projects in Seattle and Portland. A celebratory event is planned for July 31 to mark the bikeway's opening, engaging the community in this new initiative.

Over the course of approximately one year, data will be gathered to assess the bikeway's impact on all street users and local businesses. If the outcomes are favorable, Bellevue may pursue more permanent infrastructure changes based on the findings. This project represents Bellevue's commitment to modern transportation solutions that accommodate cyclists of all ages and abilities.
