BDA Opposes I-976, Citing Threat to State and Regional Transportation Revenue

Bellevue, WALocal News

The Bellevue Downtown Association (BDA) has taken a firm stand against Washington Initiative 976, highlighting the drastic consequences it could have on transportation funding for the state and region. After reviewing arguments from both sides, the BDA's Board of Directors voted to oppose the measure, which threatens to eliminate billions in funding for critical transportation projects. Should the initiative pass, vital developments such as light rail expansion, I-405 widening, and bus rapid transit initiatives are at risk, which could hinder the growth and mobility of Bellevue. The BDA has joined a coalition of employers and trade organizations in this opposition, emphasizing the need for effective transportation solutions to alleviate congestion and enhance transit reliability. Acknowledging that improving mobility is a key priority, the BDA has outlined a comprehensive Downtown Access Strategy aimed at enhancing travel experiences.

This strategy includes goals such as reducing drive-alone commutes and accommodating emerging technologies. The BDA strongly urges voters to reject I-976 and directs them to the campaign website "No on Tim Eyman’s I-976" for more details. The outcome of this initiative could significantly shape the future of transportation infrastructure in Bellevue and surrounding areas.
