Wrap it Up! City Program Bringing Art to Utility Boxes

Bellevue, WALocal News

The City of Bellevue's "Utility Box Wraps" program is a creative response to the challenges faced by local artists during the pandemic, aiming to beautify public spaces by transforming utility boxes into works of art. This initiative allows artists residing or working in East King County to apply for stipends of $750 to $4,000 to create designs that will be displayed on utility boxes, enhancing the visual appeal of neighborhoods like BelRed. Manette Stamm, Arts Program Assistant, emphasizes the program's goal to infuse character and interest into the public realm, particularly as communities seek uplifting experiences. The selection process prioritizes artistic merit and relevance to local themes, such as the area's historical agricultural significance. With the project set to launch in phases over the coming years, Bellevue is positioning itself as a vibrant hub for public art.

The utility box wraps will not only provide long-lasting visual impact, with lifespans of up to ten years, but also promote community engagement during a time when traditional art venues are limited. Selected artists will have the month of April to finalize their designs, with installations expected to commence in the summer. The positive public response indicates strong community interest in this innovative arts initiative.
