City Council to consider purchase of land to extend Coal Creek Natural Area

The Bellevue City Council is scheduled to discuss a significant land acquisition proposal during its final meeting of 2024 on December 10. The council will consider purchasing a 12. 2-acre parcel adjacent to the Coal Creek Natural Area, which is crucial for maintaining the ecological corridor between Coal Creek and Cougar Mountain Regional Park. This acquisition is supported by a $9. 2 million grant from the King County Conservation Futures Fund, aimed at enhancing parks and open spaces in the region.

To fund the remaining $9. 9 million purchase price, Bellevue plans to utilize $8. 3 million from city funds, including the 2022 Parks Levy, alongside approximately $1. 6 million in potential future grants. Parks Director Michael Shiosaki highlighted the community's strong support for preserving natural spaces and ensuring recreational opportunities for residents.

The land contains vital environmental areas and serves as a critical trail link connecting the city's trail system to Cougar Mountain Regional Park. However, the property is currently held by a private developer who has plans to construct 35 homes on the site, making the acquisition urgent. The council's decision could significantly impact the city’s long-term vision for parks and open space connectivity.
