Bellevue Remembers Those Impacted by Traffic Crashes

The Bellevue City Council has designated November 17 as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims for the second year, recognizing the significant impact of traffic collisions on the community. In a proclamation released on November 19, the council renewed its support for the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eradicate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. Since launching this initiative in 2015, Bellevue has implemented several safety measures to enhance road safety, including leading pedestrian intervals at crosswalks and thorough school zone road safety assessments. However, troubling statistics reveal that a fatality or serious injury occurs every 15 days on Bellevue's streets, with over 70% of these incidents linked to dangerous driving behaviors such as failing to yield to pedestrians, distracted driving, and speeding. The council is actively encouraging community involvement by promoting the Vision Zero pledge, which commits residents to safer driving practices.

This initiative aims to foster a collective effort towards safer roads, especially in light of the recent increase in traffic-related incidents. By signing the pledge, community members can take a proactive stance in supporting road safety initiatives in Bellevue.
