City takes action to address immediate nutrition needs in community

Bellevue has committed $235,000 to local food assistance agencies in response to federal SNAP benefit cuts impacting the community. With over 3,000 households in Bellevue eligible for these benefits, the city aims to address food insecurity among families, particularly affecting nearly 4,000 children. Mayor Lynne Robinson highlighted the critical need for immediate action, as families face uncertainty about their next meals. The city will allocate $150,000 from its operating contingency to 11 community-based organizations that provide food assistance. Furthermore, the parks and community services department will distribute grocery gift cards, funded by $85,000 in community donations, to participating agencies in the Essentials For All drive.

This effort continues to collect food and hygiene items through November 15. City Manager Diane Carlson praised the collaboration between local support agencies and city departments. Bellevue's commitment builds on the $17 million already invested in human services during the current biennium to address urgent community needs.
