Bellevue to evaluate installing new speed safety cameras

Bellevue, WALocal News

Bellevue is set to expand its speed safety camera program, targeting new locations by late 2025 to enhance traffic safety. This initiative aligns with recent state legislation that broadens the use of speed cameras, allowing them in high-risk areas such as parks and school zones. Speeding is a leading cause of severe crashes in the city, reinforcing Bellevue's Vision Zero goal to eliminate such incidents by 2030. Transportation Director Andrew Singelakis noted that speed significantly affects injury severity in crashes. Community engagement will be a critical part of the process, with residents encouraged to share their input through questionnaires on the city’s platform.

Following the completion of a Speed Safety Camera Program Operations Guide, the City Council will review proposed camera locations. Installation of new cameras is expected to commence in mid-2026, following a phased approach. The program will also ensure equitable distribution of camera locations and reinvestment of revenue into traffic safety improvements.
