Austin overdose deaths plummet
U. S. drug overdose deaths peaked at 114,670 in June 2023 but fell to 80,391 in 2024, marking a significant decline. In Travis County, opioid-related deaths dropped from 486 in 2023 to 380 in 2024, reflecting a 22% decrease. Fentanyl-related deaths decreased from 279 to 179, a reduction of 36%.
The decline follows increased access to naloxone, particularly after Narcan became available over the counter in 2023. Mayor Kirk Watson stated that the city is transitioning from crisis management to preventative measures, thanks to a $2 million federal grant that facilitated naloxone distribution and training. The grant provided over 24,000 doses of Narcan, which are now standard in emergency vehicles. Despite the positive trend, officials note that overdose deaths remain above pre-pandemic levels, with 174 deaths recorded in the year ending January 2020. Local health authorities will continue anti-opioid programs funded by court settlements, ensuring ongoing support for the community.
