Austin City Council Moves to Ban New Vape Shops Near Schools and Daycares

Austin, TXLocal News

The Austin City Council approved a measure to restrict new vape shops from opening within 1,000 feet of schools and childcare facilities. This decision instructs the city manager to prepare an ordinance aimed at limiting youth access to e-cigarettes. Council Member Krista Laine highlighted the detrimental effects of e-cigarettes on children's health and education. The resolution focuses on engaging stakeholders such as local schools and parents while considering community feedback. The council plans to revise the ordinance before its return for further consideration.

A draft is expected to be revealed on September 11, 2025. This initiative aligns with a national effort to reduce vaping among teenagers, as nearly 10% of middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023. If approved, Austin would join other Texas cities enforcing strict regulations on vape product sales.
