Unseasonably Warm Weather Hits Austin Amid South Texas Heat Surge

Austin, TXLocal News

Austin is currently experiencing an unseasonably warm spell, with temperatures projected to approach 90 degrees this week, while parts of South Texas, including cities like Laredo and McAllen, may reach triple digits. This early heat wave, attributed to dry air and a compressing cold front, is notable as Laredo typically sees its first 100-degree day around April 10. If this forecast holds, it will mark one of the earliest instances of such high temperatures on record. The National Weather Service warns that humidity levels could plummet to as low as 5-10%, exacerbating the heat and increasing the risk of wildfires. Although Austin is not expected to hit 100 degrees, the combination of low humidity and strong winds is concerning for fire safety.

As record-breaking temperatures sweep across the state, residents are advised to stay hydrated and limit outdoor exposure. The fire risk is particularly high west of Austin and throughout Central Texas, where conditions will be driest. Texans are urged to remain aware of fire hazards as they navigate this early taste of summer heat.
