A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Central Texas, affecting Austin and surrounding areas, with hazardous travel conditions expected due to ongoing wintry precipitation. The National Weather Service warns of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, leading to the activation of the Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations Center. This activation facilitates a coordinated response among city departments, partner agencies, and NGOs, with critical updates being posted online in multiple languages. Residents are advised to avoid travel if possible and to adhere to safety tips, such as driving at slower speeds and avoiding elevated areas prone to black ice. Approximately 550 individuals utilized the City’s cold weather shelters, which will continue to operate 24/7 through January 22.

Additionally, select city libraries are serving as warming centers. Residents are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts through Warn Central Texas to stay informed.
