The Austin Police Department (APD) is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on September 10, 2024, involving suspect Franklin Earl Miller. In a press release, the APD outlined its commitment to transparency and accountability, stating they would share preliminary details about the critical incident within ten business days. Officers were dispatched to a call about a prowler allegedly attempting to break into a business, where Mr. Miller was reported to be armed with a rock and possibly a firearm. Upon arrival, officers faced non-compliance from Mr.

Miller, who made sudden movements and was observed gripping what appeared to be a pistol. After 14 minutes of failed de-escalation attempts, officers discharged their firearms when he raised the weapon at them. Following the shooting, officers immediately provided life-saving measures for Mr. Miller. All six officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol in such incidents.

The APD is collaborating with the Office of Police Oversight to ensure a thorough investigation and release additional information as it becomes available.
