Affordable, supportive housing opens on Austin’s North Side

The City of Austin has officially opened the Burnet Place Apartments, a newly constructed affordable housing complex aimed at supporting individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Located at 8007 Burnet Road on the city's North Side, this facility features 61 units and is strategically positioned near high-frequency transit routes and activity centers as part of the Imagine Austin growth plan. Mandy DeMayo, Interim Director for the Housing Department, emphasized the importance of this unique community in addressing the often-overlooked needs of those living with HIV/AIDS. The affordable units include 12 reserved for residents earning at or below 30% of the median family income, with additional units allocated for those at 40% and 50% MFI. Project Transitions, the developer, will manage the property and provide essential wrap-around services, including healthcare access and educational programs.

Jeannie Swink from Project Transitions highlighted the critical connection between stable housing and effective medical care for individuals living with HIV. Total construction costs for the project were over $18 million, funded through multiple sources, showcasing a collaborative effort to tackle housing instability. This initiative is a vital step towards reducing homelessness and improving health outcomes in Austin.
