Northbridge Shelter Welcomes People Experiencing Homelessness from Downtown Encampment

The City of Austin has launched a new effort to assist individuals experiencing homelessness by relocating them from the downtown Buford Tower encampment to the Northbridge Shelter, part of the Housing-Focused Encampment Assistance Link (HEAL) initiative. This initiative aims to provide temporary shelter and support while facilitating the transition to permanent housing for those affected. Approximately 60 people will be accommodated at the Northbridge Shelter, which is located at 7400 North IH35 and was previously utilized as a Protective Lodging facility during the COVID-19 pandemic. City officials, including Homeless Strategy Officer Dianna Grey, highlighted the significance of this move as a critical step towards stability for those affected. The HEAL initiative, approved by the Austin City Council, collaborates with various community partners, including The Other Ones Foundation and Capital Metro, to effectively address homelessness in the area.

In previous months, the initiative has successfully relocated individuals from other encampment sites into shelters and assisted them in finding permanent housing. The City is also re-evaluating the use of a previously leased facility at 3105 North IH35, which will no longer serve as a bridge shelter. This coordinated effort underscores Austin's commitment to tackling homelessness through compassionate and strategic measures.
