Central Texas Flood Survivors Face Losses as FEMA Deadline Nears

Austin, TXLocal News

Survivors of the Central Texas floods face daunting challenges, with the disaster resulting in at least 138 fatalities and widespread property damage. Harry Sherwood, who lost nearly everything, plans to demolish his home on September 13 and might rebuild with flood insurance. The approaching FEMA Individual Assistance deadline has prompted over 7,900 residents to seek aid, but only a small fraction had flood insurance when the disaster struck. Economic vulnerability is prevalent, as over two-thirds of applicants report annual incomes below $60,000, and 38% earn $30,000 or less. Experts warn that inadequate federal assistance could hinder recovery for many households.

Sherwood’s family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign for recovery expenses, highlighting community resilience amid loss. Authorities emphasize the urgency for residents to apply for assistance through various channels before the deadline passes. As clean-up efforts continue, the emotional toll on survivors remains substantial.
