Austin ISD Cuts Jobs as Federal Education Grant Delays Strain Budget

Austin, TXLocal News

The Austin Independent School District (AISD) announced staff reductions due to delays in the distribution of over $9 million in federal education grants. Superintendent Matias Segura informed families that the district is reorganizing its staffing structure in light of this funding interruption. Although federal officials confirmed that the funding would be available by July 25, the district aims to reduce its dependence on uncertain federal resources moving forward. Segura reported that 109 staff members are impacted, with most remaining in their positions until the end of the fall semester. However, some roles will be phased out afterward.

AISD will continue essential programs, such as multilingual education and ACE Austin enrichment, by utilizing alternative funding sources. The district is also tackling a $100 million budget shortfall by eliminating over 170 Central Office positions as part of its plan for sustainable financial management. This situation highlights ongoing challenges in federal education funding and its direct impact on local school operations.
