Austin, TXLocal News

This week, construction kicked off for Iris Gardens, a 150-unit affordable senior living complex in southeast Austin. The complex will provide housing for older adults on fixed incomes, offering one- and two-bedroom apartments for households at 30% to 60% of the area median income. Amenities will include a community room, fitness center, and laundry areas, along with programs focused on employment assistance and health classes. Developed by Family Eldercare and Vecino Group, the project aims to alleviate housing barriers faced by seniors. "Iris Gardens is an important step in addressing the need for a safe and inclusive place to call home," stated Mandy DeMayo, interim director of the Austin Housing Department.

The total cost of the complex is estimated at $50 million, financed through an $8 million loan from the Austin Housing Finance Corp. and $4. 5 million in federal funds from Travis County. Construction is scheduled for completion in late spring 2027. The initiative responds to the ongoing housing affordability crisis in Austin, particularly affecting older residents.
