Inaugural Secoriea Turner scholarship awarded to Spelman student

Atlanta, GALocal News

The inaugural Secoriea Turner scholarship has been awarded to Blair Moore, a sophomore English major at Spelman College, in memory of Secoriea Turner, an 8-year-old girl fatally shot during protests against police violence in Atlanta in 2020. Secoriea was killed while riding in a vehicle with her mother and a family friend near the Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks was killed by police. To honor their daughter's legacy and inspire future leaders, Secoriea's family established the scholarship earlier this year. Charmaine Turner, Secoriea's mother, emphasized the scholarship's role in motivating young individuals to advocate for social justice. The scholarship is backed by a five-year commitment from local nonprofits and was recently awarded to Moore, who expressed her gratitude for the opportunity.

The ongoing investigation into Secoriea's death has led to two suspects remaining in jail without bond, facing serious charges. This case underscores the urgent need for community action and support in the face of violence, and the scholarship represents a step toward healing and empowerment for the community.
