Uber offering driverless rides with Waymo in Atlanta, Austin

Atlanta, GALocal News

Uber is set to enhance its rideshare offerings by introducing driverless rides in Atlanta, thanks to an expanded partnership with Waymo, scheduled to commence in early 2025. The collaboration will deploy a fleet of Waymo's fully autonomous, all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, which will grow over time. Riders using services such as UberX, Uber Green, and Uber Comfort will have the chance to be matched with these autonomous vehicles for qualifying trips. This development builds on the companies' existing partnership initiated in May 2023, which already saw successful autonomous driving technology implemented in Phoenix. Waymo has a proven track record, having provided fully autonomous trips for tens of thousands of riders in Phoenix, showcasing the viability of their technology.

The introduction of driverless rides in Atlanta not only enhances the rideshare experience but also marks a significant milestone in the evolution of urban transportation. With driverless cars being tested on Atlanta streets, the city is poised to become a key player in the future of autonomous vehicle technology. As both Uber and Waymo continue to innovate, the partnership reflects the growing trend toward automation in the rideshare industry.
