Trio of immigrant rights laws signed by WA governor

Anacortes, WALocal News

Governor Bob Ferguson signed three critical bills this week aimed at strengthening immigrant rights in Washington State. House Bill 1232 empowers state health authorities to inspect private detention centers, including the for-profit facility in Tacoma, enhancing standards for sanitation and medical care. Senate Bill 5104 allows the Department of Labor and Industries to investigate workplace coercion, providing immigrant workers with greater security while maintaining confidentiality during complaints. Senate Bill 5714 clarifies that bail bond agents cannot enforce immigration laws or disclose defendants' immigration status. These legislative measures respond to federal immigration policies under President Trump, which have intensified scrutiny on immigrants.

Lawmakers emphasize the importance of protecting vulnerable workers and ensuring transparency in detention practices. The laws are designed to create a safer environment for immigrants in Washington State. Lawmakers hope these initiatives will demonstrate a commitment to immigrant rights amid ongoing national debates on immigration.
