WAs new resident portal promises easier access to state services
Washington state will launch a Resident Portal in early 2026, streamlining access to services from over 140 agencies. The initiative, led by Chief Technology Officer Gretchen Peri, aims to improve government efficiency, mimicking private sector platforms while maintaining public accountability. A pilot program tested features like AI chatbots and personalized service recommendations for various services, including professional licenses and social assistance. Chief Privacy Officer Katy Ruckle emphasized the significance of data security and privacy, outlining new guidelines for responsible data collection. This project aligns with an executive order from Gov.
Bob Ferguson to enhance service delivery for residents. Officials plan to gradually roll out additional features and agencies through 2029. The portal represents a shift from the older Secure Access Washington system, reflecting over 25 years of digital government evolution in Washington. Ruckle noted that responsible AI deployment focuses on fairness, transparency, and protecting user privacy while ensuring human oversight.
