ShakeOut Earthquake Drill October 16, 2025

Anacortes, WALocal News

Anacortes will participate in the Great Washington ShakeOut earthquake drill on October 16, 2025, at 10:16 a. m. Residents are encouraged to practice safety measures, including dropping, covering, and holding on, to build muscle memory for real emergencies. The drill will include tests of tsunami sirens, which will sound the actual tsunami warning, differing from the typical monthly chimes. Additionally, the Emergency Alert System will be tested on local radio and television.

This year's ShakeOut theme, "Be Alerted," highlights various ways to receive emergency alerts, such as through the MyShake Earthquake Early Warning App. Over 1. 4 million Washington residents have registered for the drill, which is free and helps evaluate outreach effectiveness. A free webinar on disaster preparedness will occur on October 1, focusing on the science of earthquakes and tsunamis, while a Reddit session with experts is scheduled for October 9. These initiatives aim to enhance public awareness and readiness for potential natural disasters in the region.
