Five counselors for 2,600 students in Anacortes schools

Anacortes, WALocal News

Anacortes School District announced it will reduce its counseling staff from eight to five positions in the 2025-26 school year, affecting 2,600 students. The budget cuts, amounting to a $1. 5 million shortfall, were approved by the school board amid rising costs and declining enrollment. Parents and students expressed concerns about the timing of these reductions, particularly given the ongoing youth mental health crisis. Kara Fox, one of the counselors whose position is eliminated, shared her extensive responsibilities, which included assessing suicide risks and helping students with college applications.

The district has faced financial challenges for several years, cutting $900,000 in expenses in 2022-23 and $3. 2 million in 2023-24. Currently, 43% of the budget is allocated to wages and benefits, highlighting the strain on resources. The fund balance is expected to drop to 1. 36%, below the school board's required minimum of 4%.

If the trend continues, further staffing reductions may be necessary in future years.
