Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates Capital Bikeshare's 15th anniversary, highlighting its evolution into the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S. Since its launch on September 20, 2010, the program has grown from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the DC metro area. In 2024, riders recorded more than 6 million trips, breaking annual ridership records for the second consecutive year, reflecting a 36. 9% increase from 2023.
DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum stated that CaBi is essential for connecting residents with jobs and cultural sites. The administration has replaced over 140 of the oldest stations since 2021 and launched a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes. Furthermore, partnerships with organizations like Achilles International have increased access to adaptive cycling for residents with disabilities. The Bowser Administration's commitment to multimodal transportation includes substantial investments in bike and pedestrian infrastructure. The FY26 Budget allocates $64 million to WMATA and $74 million for new trails, aiming to enhance accessibility and promote sustainable transport.
