Slain Metro driver to be remembered Friday with downtown bus procession

Seattle, WALocal News

On Friday morning, a memorial procession will honor the life of Metro driver Shawn Yim, who was tragically killed in a stabbing incident in Seattle. The procession will feature several dozen buses and transit vehicles departing from Metro's Central/Atlantic bus base at 10 AM, traveling through downtown Seattle to raise awareness about the safety of public transit drivers and riders. Yim's death, resulting from a confrontation with passenger Richard Sitzlack, has sparked increased calls for better protection measures within the city's public transit systems. The altercation began over a disagreement about a window, escalating to Yim being pepper-sprayed and subsequently stabbed as he pursued the assailant. In light of the memorial, Metro encourages the public to allow extra travel time due to expected traffic delays and service disruptions.

Following the procession, a memorial service will be held at the Lumen Field Event Center from 11 AM to 1 PM, providing an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance. Metro expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support as they mourn Yim's loss. The event underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols within public transportation.
