Belmont-Boylston double house considered as landmark in preparation for Historic Seattle sale

Historic Seattle is in the process of nominating the 1901-era apartment building at 1411 Boylston Ave for official landmark status as part of preparations for its sale. This three-story structure has operated as low-income housing, providing vital accommodation in the area as a 17-unit single room occupancy facility. Designed by the architectural firm Josenhans and Allan, the building is characterized by its Queen Anne-style architecture, complete with Colonial Revival elements such as Palladian windows and clustered Tuscan columns. The Landmarks Preservation Board has been advised by city staff to recognize the property due to its distinctive architectural features and historical significance. A public hearing is set for Wednesday, where community members will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the landmark nomination.

If the board approves the proposal, it will return for a final vote on the designation. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to preserving historical structures while maintaining their role in providing affordable housing. The outcome will significantly impact both the historical landscape and housing availability in the Capitol Hill area.
