Sound Transit collecting feedback on plan to improve safety at dangerous at-grade crossings
Sound Transit is seeking public input to improve safety at its at-grade crossings, which have been the site of multiple accidents, including fatalities in South Seattle. This initiative is part of the comprehensive At-grade Crossing Program launched in 2021, which aims to enhance safety at crossings where trains intersect with vehicles and pedestrians. With new safety rules and enhancements expected to be approved by May, the agency is keen on addressing long-standing issues that have left its system vulnerable to dangerous collisions. Preliminary data from previously completed projects indicate a reduction in incidents, underscoring the program's effectiveness. Key enhancements under consideration include the installation of dynamic message signs, railroad pavement markings, and advanced pedestrian gate systems.
Sound Transit is inviting feedback from riders and residents until February 16, 2025, to inform the final plan and ensure community needs are met. This proactive approach highlights the agency's commitment to achieving zero fatalities in its operations.
