Sound Transit collecting feedback on plan to improve safety at dangerous at-grade crossings

Seattle, WALocal News

Sound Transit is collecting public feedback on a new safety initiative for at-grade crossings, which have been the site of numerous accidents in South Seattle. The At-Grade Crossing Program, launched in 2021, aims to enhance safety where light rail tracks intersect with vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Despite the underground nature of the rail system in Capitol Hill, the agency recognizes the urgent need for improvements at surface-level crossings. As part of this effort, Sound Transit has completed nine safety enhancement projects in the Rainier Valley, resulting in promising early data that indicates a reduction in incidents. Proposed enhancements include dynamic message signs, LED signage, and pedestrian gate improvements to better protect users.

Sound Transit is encouraging riders and residents to share their crossing experiences until February 16th, aiming to refine the final safety plan based on community input. The agency emphasizes its commitment to achieving zero fatalities at these dangerous crossings. The program underscores a proactive approach to public safety and community engagement in transportation planning.
