Sound Transit Collecting Feedback on Safety Improvements for At-Grade Crossings

Seattle, WALocal News

In response to a series of serious incidents at at-grade crossings, Sound Transit is collecting feedback from the public to enhance safety measures along its light rail routes in South Seattle. The At-Grade Crossing Program, initiated in 2021, aims to address the vulnerabilities posed by intersections where trains and vehicles share the same level. So far, Sound Transit has completed nine safety enhancement projects in the Rainier Valley, with early data suggesting positive trends in incident reduction. Proposed safety enhancements include the installation of dynamic message signs, LED signage, and improved pedestrian gates. The agency is proactively inviting residents and riders to share their crossing experiences by February 16, which will help shape the final program.

With a target of zero fatalities, Sound Transit is hopeful that the implementation of new safety rules will significantly reduce risks. The final plan is anticipated to be approved by May 2025. This initiative is crucial for improving community safety at high-risk intersections and ensuring a more secure environment for all transit users.
