Seattle Unveils New Food Action Plan to Combat Food Insecurity and High Costs
Seattle's updated Food Action Plan is a comprehensive initiative designed to tackle food insecurity and rising costs in the city. Led by District 3 representative Joy Hollingsworth, the plan aims to create community-driven solutions that enhance access to fresh, affordable food for all residents. It focuses on four main goals: increasing food security, advancing local food production, promoting an equitable economy, and reducing food waste. Hollingsworth emphasizes the unsustainable nature of current food consumption patterns and the need to integrate food access with housing solutions. The plan specifically addresses disparities in food access in neighborhoods like Capitol Hill and the Central District, where high housing costs and limited grocery options are prevalent.
Developed with input from over 250 leaders from urban agriculture, Tribal communities, and local organizations, this initiative prioritizes equity, particularly for communities of color disproportionately affected by food insecurity. By fostering a resilient food network, the updated Food Action Plan aims to ensure consistent access to nutritious food for Seattle residents, promoting healthier lives and stronger communities.
