New homeless service center planned for vacant 3rd Avenue building in downtown Seattle

Seattle, WALocal News

The Stability Through Access and Resources (STAR) Center is a new facility being established in downtown Seattle to address homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse issues. Located at 619 Third Avenue and operated by the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC), the center will accommodate up to 85 individuals, particularly those with psychiatric and substance use disorders. This initiative responds to the challenges posed by the current Navigation Center, which has been criticized for contributing to crime in the area. DESC Executive Director Daniel Malone emphasized the center's role in providing essential care and support for vulnerable residents. To ensure safety, robust security measures will be implemented, including 24/7 staffing and regular perimeter patrols.

Seattle's administration, led by Mayor Bruce Harrell, is actively seeking effective strategies to combat the homelessness crisis, particularly in light of the fentanyl-related issues affecting the region. The STAR Center aims to serve as a comprehensive healthcare and resource hub for the community.
