Deciding Where to Host Arbor Day

Portland, ORLocal News

Portland has selected the Cully Neighborhood to host Arbor Day in 2025, where tree canopy coverage currently averages 20 percent, significantly lower than the west side's 56 percent. This choice reflects a strategy to target areas in need of increased greenery, particularly in schools where students can benefit from improved access to natural spaces. On Arbor Day, 15 trees will be planted, and an additional 20 trees will follow later in the year through the Learning Landscapes program. Studies indicate that increased tree coverage at schools can reduce student stress, enhance focus, and promote physical activity. The initiative underscores Portland's commitment to urban forestry and improving environmental health in priority service areas.

The city aims to engage community members in the effort to expand the tree canopy. As such, this project not only serves ecological goals but also supports educational outcomes for children. The decision aligns with Portland's broader urban greening objectives.
