New WA initiatives seek to undo rewrite of parental rights law, block trans girls in sports

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Let’s Go Washington announced plans to gather signatures for two new initiatives aimed at parental rights and the participation of transgender girls in sports. The group, led by Brian Heywood, must collect 308,911 signatures by January 2 to present the measures to state lawmakers. This effort follows a contentious legislative session where House Bill 1296 revised existing parental rights laws, causing frustration among supporters of the original initiative. One of the new initiatives seeks to repeal the changes made by House Bill 1296, which limited parental access to student medical records and modified student rights. State Rep.

Monica Stonier criticized the conservative group's approach, saying it distracts from meaningful policy discussions. The proposed initiatives come amid scrutiny from the Trump administration over Washington's gender inclusion policies. In March, the U. S. Department of Education began investigating the Tumwater School District regarding transgender athlete participation, complicating local school officials' decisions.

If successful, the initiatives could significantly impact the ongoing debate about parental rights and gender issues in Washington schools.
