American journalism on the brink Save the date for Stripped for Parts documentary screening Oct. 25
My Neighborhood News Network and the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County will host a screening of the documentary "Stripped for Parts" on October 25 at the Edmonds Theater, with doors opening at 11 a. m. The film reveals how hedge funds have taken control of many legacy newspapers, resulting in severe newsroom cuts and the closure of 2,000 papers across the U. S. in the last 20 years.
Following the screening, a panel discussion will feature local journalism experts, including Brenda Harrison of the League of Women Voters and Michael Whitney of the Snohomish Tribune. Teresa Wippel, President and CEO of My Neighborhood News Network, will moderate the discussion. Tickets cost $25, with additional donations welcomed to support the organization. The event aims to highlight the significant challenges faced by local news outlets and foster community engagement. "Stripped for Parts" underscores the need for sustainable local journalism in the face of profit-driven ownership models.
The screening and discussion will serve as a platform for addressing these critical issues.
