South County Fire honored for program working to break cycle of addiction
The Snohomish County EMS Agency honored Captain Keith Sharp and Community Health Worker Jordan Mohrenne for their work on the CORE program, which addresses opioid addiction and enhances recovery rates. Launched in September 2024, the program has successfully helped nearly 75% of contacted patients enter recovery, starkly contrasting with the 10% success rate typically seen without EMS intervention. Buprenorphine has been administered to 36 overdose patients, easing withdrawal symptoms and minimizing the need for further emergency services. Dr. Ryan Keay highlighted their ability to collaborate with recovery facilities, law enforcement, and other EMS personnel to create a holistic care strategy.
The CORE program has also facilitated the distribution of 280 Narcan kits, equipping high-risk patients with life-saving resources. Funded by a grant from the Co-Responder Outreach Alliance and in partnership with the University of Washington School of Social Work, the initiative exemplifies effective community health intervention. By reducing ambulance transports and hospital visits, the program not only aids individuals but also conserves taxpayer resources. The efforts of Sharp and Mohrenne represent a critical step in combating the opioid crisis in the region.
