Lynnwood, WALocal News

September is designated as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WSVA) encourages community engagement under the theme "Speak Up, Save Lives. " In 2024, Washington reported 211 veteran suicides, with firearms accounting for 75% of those deaths. The Veterans Crisis Line, available at 988, provides free and confidential support for veterans in crisis and their loved ones. The WSVA's Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Toolkit offers vital resources for individuals to connect veterans and service members with necessary help. Training sessions from the WSVA's Suicide Prevention Team aim to equip the community with tools to support at-risk individuals effectively.

These efforts address the stigma surrounding mental health issues and promote open dialogue about seeking help. Furthermore, the WSVA offers specialized training on combating stigma to enhance community understanding of veterans' needs. Engaging in these initiatives contributes to preventing suicides and fostering hope among service members and their families.
