Truck drivers can rest easier with new technology that finds parking along I-5

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has launched the Truck Parking Information Management System, aimed at aiding truck drivers in finding safe parking along the Interstate 5 corridor. This program offers real-time data about parking availability, allowing drivers to plan up to four hours ahead. With only one parking space available for every 11 trucks nationwide, the initiative addresses a pressing issue, as 75% of truck drivers in Washington face challenges finding safe parking at least once a week. WSDOT partnered with the University of Washington Star Lab and technology vendors Drivewyze and ParkerTruck to deliver this innovative solution. Funding comes from the Freight Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the federal Infrastructure for Rebuilding America grant program.

The system is currently operational at nine locations, with more slated for deployment through 2026. Truck drivers are encouraged to give feedback via an online survey to enhance the program's effectiveness. For ongoing updates, drivers can subscribe to WSDOT's website for email notifications concerning truck parking activities.
