Washington moves to restrict cancer-causing chemicals in cosmetics
Washington has taken a significant step by restricting over two dozen chemicals in cosmetics that release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. The new regulations, effective January 1, 2027, grant retailers until December 31, 2027, to sell their remaining stock. Shari Franjevic, who oversees the implementation of the Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, noted that safer alternatives already exist in the market. The law gives the Washington State Department of Ecology the authority to identify and limit harmful chemicals through rulemaking. A compliance webinar scheduled for October 1, 2025, will provide guidance for retailers and distributors on the new restrictions.
The initiative aims to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals, particularly for cosmetologists and consumers who frequently use these products. The Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act also encourages manufacturers to reformulate with safer ingredients. This proactive measure reflects Washington's commitment to public health and environmental safety.
