Homelessness still rising in Washington, state data shows
Washington recorded 22,173 homeless individuals in January 2025, reflecting a 4. 4% increase from the previous year. The data, collected by the Department of Commerce, indicated that 33% of the homeless population was unsheltered, living in public spaces. Notably, King County's unsheltered figures were not included this year, but it typically accounts for about 50% of the state's total. Director Joe Nguyễn highlighted the critical situation, stating that many individuals lack safe places to sleep, urging for more effective measures.
The state has allocated about $1. 8 billion towards housing and homelessness programs in the 2025-27 biennium. The annual Snapshot of Homelessness report also indicated a slight overall increase in the homeless population, with 158,791 individuals counted in January 2025. While the Point In Time Count offers valuable insights, it is affected by various factors, including weather and shelter availability. Continued investment and strategic action are necessary to address the persistent homelessness crisis in Washington.
