Native Strong Lifeline expands access with text and chat

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Native & Strong Lifeline has expanded its services to include text and chat options, targeting Native and Indigenous individuals in Washington experiencing mental health crises. This initiative addresses the alarming suicide rates within Native communities, which are the highest among racial groups in the U. S. Michele Roberts from the Washington State Department of Health stated that suicide is preventable and highlighted the importance of culturally tailored support. The Lifeline, launched in November 2022, has already answered over 15,000 calls, averaging over 600 monthly in 2023.

The addition of text and chat services aims to provide easier access for individuals to seek help in a manner that feels safe. All communications are managed by Native crisis counselors who are well-trained in crisis intervention. This 24/7 service can be reached by calling 988 and pressing 4, texting N8V to 988, or selecting the appropriate option on their website chat feature. The Lifeline reflects a commitment to serving Native communities with respect and understanding.
