State says it will continue support following federal shutdown of LGBTQ youth emergency line
The LGBTQI+ Youth Subnetwork of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline will close on July 17 following a federal decision. Launched in 2022, this service provided critical support to LGBTQIA2S+ youth aged 13 to 24, who are at a higher risk of suicide and mental health issues. The Washington State Department of Health underscored the need for tailored support due to historic discrimination against these communities. The closure is anticipated to increase demand on the main 988 Lifeline, potentially affecting access to care during crises. Michele Roberts, assistant secretary for prevention and community health, expressed deep concern about losing this specialized service.
In response, the state plans to ensure that crisis counselors are trained to support LGBTQIA2S+ youth. The 988 Lifeline remains operational, providing free, confidential support through three contracted crisis centers. Additional resources continue to be available, including the Veterans Crisis Line and Spanish Subnetwork, among others.
