Council moves closer to adopting minor tree code amendments and confirms new public works director
The Edmonds City Council moved forward with a minor tree code revision designed to update tree regulations and mitigate legal issues after a four-year review process. Councilmember Chris Eck advocated for removing appraisal requirements and the cap on tree replacement fees, warning that current proposals could threaten tree canopy. Concerns about litigation led to a compromise, proposing an increase in the fee-in-lieu to $4 to fund park tree planting. The council unanimously approved the final motion, reflecting a desire for balance between development and preservation. In addition, the council confirmed a new public works director during the meeting.
Councilmembers also discussed housing amendments for the North Bowl Hub, which aims to enhance multi-family housing while considering community input. Residents expressed appreciation for the collaborative approach taken by the council and the planning board. The ongoing dialogue between officials and residents was highlighted as a positive step towards community-focused governance.
