South County Fire to hold public hearings Oct. 21 on 2026 budget and benefit charge
The South County Fire Board will conduct public hearings on October 21 at 7 p. m. regarding the proposed 2026 budget and benefit charge. Residents can attend the meeting at South County Fire Headquarters or join remotely via Zoom. The proposed budget increases costs for the average homeowner by just over $7 monthly, while adding 30 firefighters and six administrative staff to maintain emergency services.
The benefit charge for a typical 2,000-square-foot home would increase from $71. 64 to $106. 92 annually, reflecting a fairer funding approach based on building size and risk rather than property value. The proposed property tax levy rate would be slightly lower than in 2025, at $1. 15 per $1,000 of assessed value.
South County Fire has kept property tax rate increases below inflation since the Regional Fire Authority's formation. These changes aim to meet growing community needs while ensuring affordable emergency services. Community members can also submit comments via email or voicemail ahead of the meeting.
