City of Bend and Deschutes County Unanimously Agree to Juniper Ridge Strategy at Joint Meeting
On September 4, 2024, a significant agreement was reached between the City of Bend and Deschutes County during a joint meeting, focusing on managing dispersed camping at Juniper Ridge. The governing bodies unanimously approved the establishment of a Temporary Safe Stay Area to enhance safety for both housed and unhoused residents while protecting the environment. Covering 170 acres of combined County and City land, this area aims to mitigate public health risks associated with camping in the region. Individuals camping outside this designated area will be relocated by May 31, 2025, ensuring a structured approach to homelessness. The plan includes essential services such as drinking water stations and portable toilets, along with increased security measures.
County Commissioner Chair Patti Adair emphasized the collaborative effort as a crucial step toward addressing complex community issues, while Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler highlighted the importance of creating safety in Juniper Ridge and providing pathways for unhoused individuals to transition to permanent housing. The agreement will also involve examining legal and land use issues to facilitate the management strategy, underscoring a comprehensive approach to the region's ongoing challenges.
